Watch Talk with Jason The Gemologist: What a Legend of the Rolex World Taught Me

Watch Talk with Jason The Gemologist: What a Legend of the Rolex World Taught Me

Venus Jewelers’ very own Jason the Gemologist sits down with John Buckley, the New York icon who has a Rolex dial named after him, and comes away with advice every watch buyer needs to hear:

I’ve been in this business my whole life. I grew up around watches and jewelry, trained as a GIA gemologist, and I still get excited when I learn something new. So when I had the chance to sit down with John Buckley, I made sure to bring my best questions.

If you’re not already familiar with John, here’s what you need to know: he’s been dealing vintage Rolex out of New York City’s 47th Street jewelry district for decades. He’s the kind of person other experts call when they can’t figure something out. And somewhere along the way, the watch community did something that almost never happens in any industry. They named a Rolex dial after him. The “Buckley Dial,” a vintage Datejust face from the 1970s and ’80s that John championed before anyone else was paying attention, now carries his name permanently in the collector world. That’s not a marketing title. That’s a legacy.

I asked him these two questions. The answers stuck with me, and I think they’ll stick with you too.

Question One: What Do Beginners Care About That Experts Don’t?

I asked John what a first-time buyer tends to put on a pedestal that a true collector would actually brush off. His first answer? Box and papers.
Now, before anyone panics, he wasn’t dismissing them. Box and papers do matter. For certain rare, vintage references, original documentation can be the difference between a good watch and a great investment. But John’s point was about priority.

“I’m not minimizing box and papers, but I’d rather have a beautiful condition watch than a crappy one with papers.” - John Buckley

That’s a sentence worth reading twice. The watch comes first. Always. The box is just cardboard.

I’ll say this from my own experience: my personal collection, which I've built over years working inside this industry, came together largely without original documentation. That’s not unusual. That’s the reality of how watches move through the world. People wear them for decades, move across the country, pass them on to their kids, and somewhere in all of that, the paperwork disappears. The watch doesn’t become less real. It doesn’t become less beautiful. It just needs a seller who will stand behind it.

That’s the part that matters most when papers aren’t in the picture: who are you buying from? At Venus Jewelers, we’ve been the answer to that question for over 45 years. Our name is on every watch we sell.

John also spoke about the online marketplace, and he wasn’t gentle about it. When you buy from a faceless seller on a resale platform, you have no idea what that watch has been through. You can’t hold it. You can’t ask hard questions. You have no one to call if something isn’t right. Compare that to walking into a store where someone looks you in the eye and puts their reputation behind what they’re handing you. That difference is everything.

Question Two: What’s the One Thing That Can Quietly Destroy a Watch’s Value?

This is where John really lit up. I asked him what single detail could most dramatically change what a watch is worth — and he didn’t hesitate.

A refinished dial.

“If it’s an original dial, I’ll buy it just for the dial.” - John Buckley

Think about that for a moment. John Buckley - a man who has handled thousands of Rolexes and literally has a dial named after him - will purchase an entire watch just to get his hands on an untouched, original face. That tells you everything about how precious originality is in this world.

Here’s what a refinished dial means in plain terms: someone took the watch face, arguably the most soul-defining part of the timepiece, and had it repainted or recoated to make it look new again. While the intention might have been good, the result is heartbreaking for a collector. That original surface, with its decades of honest aging and factory-applied finish, is gone forever. You can’t get it back. And the value of the watch decreases dramatically.

John examines every watch he considers with a jeweler’s loupe. He’s seen refinished dials presented as original. He’s seen altered documentation. He’s watched well-meaning buyers get burned by sellers who knew exactly what they were selling and said nothing. His loupe has saved him more money than most people will ever spend on watches.

The second thing he warned about was over-polishing - and this one surprises people every time I bring it up.

“People don’t realize how much [polishing] devalues the watch. They let these guys polish it like they’re polishing a chrome bumper.” - John Buckley

A Rolex case is a precision object. The angles, the brushed surfaces, the sharp lines between the lugs are intentional. And all of it is finite. Every polish takes a little metal away. A gold watch might survive two or three in its lifetime. Steel, maybe three or four. After that, the edges soften, the geometry blurs, and the character that made the watch desirable begins to fade. John has even seen over-polishing erase the Rolex crown logo from a case entirely.

His advice is the same one I give: wear your watch. Enjoy it. Let it age gracefully. Scratches are proof of a life well-lived, not a problem to be fixed. John won’t even participate in polishing a watch he considers fine as-is. He sells it authentic, because that’s what it is.

The Takeaway

What struck me most about talking with John is how much his instincts align with what we’ve believed at Venus Jewelers since my family opened our doors in 1979. Authenticity over appearance. Condition over paperwork. And above all: trust the person you’re buying from, because in this market, they are your real protection.
You don’t need a famous name on a dial to buy wisely. You need the right guide. That’s what we’ve always tried to be.
